@ScottHermanFitness Scott is actually right here and I can attest to that. When done to the forehead it places much more stress on the elbows. The closer your upper arms come to 90 degrees the more the elbow acts as a fulcrum. My elbow pain goes away when done the way Scott demonstrates it.

I've been doing the Skullcrusher since football training in high school the wrong way and I'm just now realizing it I'm 27 years old and it took me trying to show the exercise to my wife to show me that I was doing it wrong I looked up a video in the first one I found was Jeff cavaliere yours was by far 10 times better than Jeff's he talks too much and I didn't really understand the differences your video was straightforward much appreciated good job
@Wrighty62 Of course it works. But it's more effective for your triceps to do it the other way. If you want to trust this one guy against lots of commenters who have been saying this is improper form, then go ahead.

@mchief101 u should keep yur gloves and use straps also. straps are good when doing traps, lats, shoulders. takes the weight off yur forearms and builds up the other muscles yur working they are good for grip when going heavy also. but so arms gloves when doing biceps, triceps and chest. but to each his own

This is a good video, but if you want something that builds triceps into huge slabs of beef you can forget about skull crushers. Do close grip bench presses and weighted dips with heavy weight (5-8 reps). These 2 movements will build your tris bigger and more powerful than any tricep exercise known to man. This will build permanent rock hard muscle unlike that high rep bullshit with a pump that you lose after your drive home from the gym.

Dude, I love your videos, but I'm sure that if you asked any of your colleagues in the fitness industry about going that far behind your head, they'd agree with LoFasZz.
What about Lying dumbbell tricep extensions with one dumbbell? You would not be able to do it unless you go behind your head if you are using a large weight. So does that mean the exercise is no good? Or how would you do it?

Actually this is just one of many ways you can do it. The traditional way though is where your head is on the bench and the bar touches your forehead and then you go back up.

those two exercises have nothing in common, the shoulderi njury comes from the rotation in the shoulder that is simply unnatural for most people, here it is only a nuance that will damage your ellbow

His shoulders aren't actually rotated back as they would be in a behind-the-neck military press. I understand the principle, but try the lift, it's really not hard on you. Furthermore, this is a natural range for many and two-handed throwing motions.

You have no Idea what your talking about. Some of the most well known bodybuilders do Skullcrushers in this way. When you start to progress into heavier weights, you WILL develop tendonitis over time, It is HORRIBLE on your elbows. Behind the neck gives you the same exact benefit, while putting less stress on the elbow. The tricep's function is to extend the arm, so I have no idea what "Your muscles aren't designed to work from back there". I don't care if you train with Obama.

When i do that exercise on close grip as i get to 90 deegres my elbows hurts so i have to do it without arriving to 90 degrees, is because i am doing something wrong? would be better to do it on wide grip? When i do it single arm wiht a dumbell i don't have that problem.

this form is quite different than the majority of the other videos on youtube. now im am confused. they dont bring the barbell as down as you do for example. they hold the bar more over the head as well.

@Njderig close grip bench and dips are certainly great tricep exercises, but they dont work long head of the triceps as well as skull crushers do. for overall development of the triceps you need to do these extension kind of movements too.

YOU WILL TEAR SHIT UP.

Let anatomy dictate your form as long as your getting the press out efficiently. Still to reiterate doing the movement like this will only place strain on shoulder, its like a static hold lat pull over with a tricep extension. This is and isolation exercise not a compound exercise.

I think this is a good exercise but I bring the bar to my forehead or even the brow of my nose, it forces you to correct your elbow positioning and it works. I've had people tell me I'm wrong, I've even had people point and laugh but I feel it in the triceps nicely and my triceps looks decent

Hi! I have both dips and skullcrushers added to my tricep program. Are those exercises too similar to each other (using the same muscle group), or will it work out fine in order to get stronger triceps?
Skullcrushers will work mostly on your triceps. Dips will get your shoulders and chest worked up aswell. It will work out fine with both.

@Liam01-02 Funny you would comment here after all these years. Pretty bad tbh lol. Life gets in the way of training more often than I would like. I work out maybe once or twice a week on average throughout the year.
@Liam01-02 Make a training program and try sticking to it. Eat a lot of everything but be careful with fastfood and candy. Drink alot of water instead of soda and sugary drinks. Train hard but remember to get enough rest. Both sleep and time between training days. IE dont work the same muscle group every day. You could easily get overworked and lose gains. It can be hard gaining weight when you are young and have high metabolism. The key to success is consistency.

Many people dont know how to do skull crushers. The way he does it is the correct way and emphasizes the long head alot more which gives you that horse shoe shape and plus you are saving your elbows in the long run

You are incorrect. There are many ways perform this exercise and bringing the weight to your forehead is just one of them. Doing them behind the head has no connection with the behind the neck press which by the way your olympic lifter friend probably endorses or atleast understands why even they are not necessarily bad for you.

I have only gone down to right above my head in this, so going all the way behind the skull is more effective?
Going behind the head adds more shoulder extension which will work the long head of the tricep more. It also puts less strain on the elbows.

@NextSuperstar88 Skullcrushers are bad for your elbows and put your arm in an unnatural position. CG bench press is a better exercise with a more natural movement for the triceps.

There are all kinds of variations of doing a skull crusher. The conventional way is to bring the weight down to the forehead, then back up, another is to bring the weight down to your chin. Keep in mind, the farther you go down the head and face, the more torque it places on the elbows, hence the reason you get pain in them for many people. What he is showing is a variation that will take a tremendous amount of tq off the elbows, but also makes the movement slightly easier too.

My local fitness warehouse currently only has in stock the Super ez curl bars. Should I take it, or wait until they restock a normal ez curl bar? My usage of it would be equally as biceps curls and triceps skull-crushers.

@MrJscotti It entirely depends on your body type actually.If you have a short head-to-shoulder ratio you should do them behind your head. If you have a long neck with low down shoulders you should do them at your skull. It's whatever feels right.

I sent have a gum, nor a bench & I've bad shoulders, one rebuilt total reverse. It simply doesn't move that way. Any other way to get the same or similar results. I'm also confused with reps. I'm doing 2 sets of 12-15 on everything I'm Doing. I need heavier weight I know...

Do you have to use an ez bar for this. Can you use a regular bar? Can you do these standing up?
You could use a regular bar, but try to get a smaller one. A wide bar will be easy to disbalance in this position and you might injure yourself. Don't do these standing up. Your back gets no support and you'll hurt yourself.

@shearfitnutritionuk Because Arnold did everything perfect and correctly, right? Using pros as a guide of how to do things properly is a good way to get hurt or learn the wrong way. Many of them develop their own way of doing things. They call them skull crushers because the original way brings the bar to the skull. The original ROM is in the name. Kind of hard to dispute that.

You need to flex at the shoulder joint too in order to fully engage the triceps muscle. The long head of the triceps attaches at the scapula.
I go to Planet Fitness, find the machine that has the whole tricep highlighted and do 4 sets of 15 reps..each time bumping the weight up 20 lbs. and do 30 pushups a day...rt now my triceps look like bodybuilder calves! lol no joke

Well if you're doing it in the right form, then maybe your forearms are simply weaker than your triceps. That's why they get fatigued first.

Actually this is much better than going down to the forehead. The long head of the tricep is attached to the shoulder joint while the other two tricep heads are not. Going behind the head will activate the long head much more and yes it will also involve some lats. I can use more weight this way, 95 lbs to forehead or 110 lbs behind. Also, my elbows do not bother me.

i always feel awkward doing skull crushers but ive only followed the generic form pictures on google. i was using the straight bar rather than ez bar and had my arms straight up and going to my forehead and my head wasn't hanging off the edge . i will try this technique next time looks a lot more efficient to what I was doing

You can perform this exercise in pretty much the exact same form but keep your head on the bench. I used to bring the bar to my nose, but when I started going behind my head, it kept my upper arms from reaching 90 degrees, and my elbow pain went away.

@Apanblod there can be alot of different variations for many exercises but when you put it behind your head it also creates more range of motion. im not a expert or anything but i do use this method but i also use other methods like above my forehead but for heavier weights. the way hes doing it i cant do as much weight so it is harder but i do feel it more.

Is it just me: If I have a slight - the slightest - DECLINE, i feel I get better range of motion and so it's kinder on the elbow joint. Anyone else share my expereince? I have searched for decline with little success.
So I have been doing this exersize wrong I drop the weight on my face on failure rep. So that was not necessary. Had 3 nose surgeries btw.

Do you even train legs? Skullcrushers are a bad tricep exercise that awkwardly loads the elbow. If you really want to train triceps do close grip bench press.

You are doing it totally wrong. That is not a skull crusher at all. The bar should come down to just about touch your forehead. Doing it this stupid way is taking extra energy to hold the bar in place with your delts etc. Very poor advice here.

Once you have leaned back and you are moving the weight behind your head, what should you be doing with your shoulders and back? The typical pinch the shoulders back and together to prevent them from rounding move?

That's just not a smart way to train them. They can take much more load on different path, arms straight and stopping at the forehead, otherwise you are training some small part of it which takes most of the main load, but it could take much more. "Why triceps isnt growing"... I recommend both a and all the ways.

Just saying. This isn't really "skullcrushers", but tricep extensions (behind the head). Skullcrushers, as the name implies has your weight above your skull (so that if you let go, it crushes your skull). Having said that - this movement is superior to skullcrushers as an overall tricep movement.

Weight training is all about working against muscle resistance. Over the years many body-builders have modified existing techniques and lifts to increase the resistance in the lift. By moving the weight behind your head on skullcrushers it allows the triceps to be worked more fully than it would be in the way you have taught. Your muscles aren't designed to work in any certain position, they simply contract and relax. Changing the angle of this makes no difference to the muscles function.
how come when you demonstrated the dumbbell skullcrusher, the form was different. You weren't bringing the weight back behind your head like you did in this.
How the hell can one relax the neck if the neck is not supported and is hanging in mid-air?! 😞 That just seems absurd to me and this exercise strains the hell out of my neck even with using my core to brace. The neck has gotta go somewhere or stabilize somehow.

My friend tells me to put my feet on the bench when I do skullcrushers, I was originally doing it like in the video but I've tried with the feet on bench "variation" and it felt easier? Is it taking away from my lift? Or?
Vaibhav Gupta Appreciate it man, I do feel it less in my core with my feet up! I could lift heavier with feet on the bench. I've already switched back to the regular form skull crushers
If you put your feet up on the bench, that relaxes your core, so your core isn't engaged while doing the exercise. That is probably why it is easier. AFAIK, it shouldn't take away from the tricep workout, but you miss out on working your abs and getting strength from them for the lift.

@Njderig Yeah, but after those exercises French Press ie Skull Crushers are probably the best option, and usually you wanna use more than two exercises, stressing the tricep from different angle and so on.

how to balance the bar during the movement if it shakes?
i did skullcrushers for a while and i always put the bar above my head instad away from my body and my elbow is messed up what should i do to fix this and how long will it take.
I've never done this exercise by bringing the bar back behind my head, I always keep my arms straight and only bend my elbows then bring the bar down to my forehead. Never thought to try this method.

@seandog1234 I'm just going by what worked for me. However I occasionally use skull crushers but not as a heavy mass builder because they tend to stress the elbows unlike close grip bench and dips. You can go as heavy as you want on those without any elbow trouble. I personally know many strong guys who complain of elbow pain (including myself) from skull crushers and not surprisingly the pain subsided when we lowered the weight or stopped doing skulls all together.
Don’t be a dick be a jane
Widen your grip, use a straight bar. The point of the skull crusher is to hit the long-head of the tricep. This head of the trice is not hit very well on pressing movements, therefore for full tricep development it is necessary to do this exercise. Where the long-head is most activated is when the bar is started behind the head (as scott herman performs it in the video). If you just bring it to your head, you might as well do a tricep cable pushdown. No point, your hitting the same muscles.
i've never seen a chick do this at my gym, but i still wanna attempt it. hopefully i can do it as well as scott without some meathead coming up to me, and telling me i'm doing it wrong. $hit gets annoying.

@MrJscotti um no, there are two heads on the tricep. doing it the way you are saying only works the tricep near your elbow joint which is in fact hurting your joint but doing it by putting it behind your head works the entire tricep and allows more space so not injure joint.

A skull crusher is basically the same movement except you lower the weight toward your forehead. It's called a "skull crusher" because if you don't control the weight on the way down, you can guess what happens.
