I was so surprised when I saw the title I was like no way they all sold out but now seeing they were being scalped now it makes sense

why didnt steam release this in waves and put limits on how many that can be purchased by an individual

Glad I don't really care much about the controller. Besides in combination with the Steam Maschine or Frame then these are something different but I'm glad I couldn't pay the scalper prices even if I want (but in reality don't want) so I don't have to care about it more or less same for every PC components.

Scalpers are actually good for consumers because they're creating massive risk for themselves. They create a battery against unavailability. People may buy some items from the scalpers, but most will wait until they can pay retail. Which means scalpers are left with inventory, so when supply picks back up, it creates an oversupply, dramatically dropping the value of the product. Why buy from a random person on the Internet when you can buy it directly from Valve? Now scalpers have to undercut Valve's prices to offload inventory making more affordable new products available. The scalper is forced to take the loss and the abundance of inventory forces Valve to drop prices to keep selling their inventory. Now you have a price war between Valve and scalpers which ends in lower prices for the consumer. This especially true with something like controllers which have no secondary revenue stream so they remain unused until purchased by the end consumer.

They need to set some sort of requirements to buy the steam machine and steam frame when they launch. Hot take, but Steam could/should have serialized the controllers to one's steam account. Order the controller through steam, and the serial number is tied to whoever ordered it. Therefore, scalpers couldn't buy and resell.

Limit 2 per steam account/credit card, for the first month of sales they could limit it to only people who have at least 750 hrs of play time (cuz 720hrs is 1 month) are allowed to purchase up to 2, AND if you don’t meet those requirements it gets ur ip address that you’re purchasing from and blocks it for 1 week from purchasing another at least during the 1st month of sales.

Steam had a pretty good measure to stop the deck from getting scalped so badly, the fact the controller had no such protection is actually such a big failing in my opinion. Genuinely an L on Valve for me. I'm disappointed not to get one, obviously. But seeing hundreds of listing's on ebay is why I believe it's a failing.

I think a good solution to this is that they should limit how many a single person can buy. lets say the lock out lasts for a month or so before you are able to purchase another one again. Oh but what about alt accounts you say. Link it to the payment method they use if the charges go to the same payment method then it should be flagged regardless of the account that uses it and if they wanna purchase it on an alt they'd have to set up another payment method. The biggest solution to this I think would be to increase the mount of loopholes you have to go through to purchase another controller this incentivizes people to just buy it as they need it not buy it to flip them

This is steam's fault for not making enough. They're so worried about the cost of electronics going up that they're afraid to overshoot. There HAS to be some way for a law to be written up to stop scalpers. Where an item from a company cannot be resold until it's been available for the the public for at least a year. The company also needs to put in parameters to stop scalping. Maybe 1 - 4 per customer? And if it's something to purchase online, the company can require you make a valid account and then limit the number of purchasing said item for the account. And yes, I know people can make multiple accounts, so to counteract it, maybe there can be a code on the site that flags an account if they use the same payment method? I'm just trying to throw ideas and possible stop-gaps for preventing scalping. Anyone got any ideas or maybe can build/refine what I already said?

They had it right when they did the pre-registration for steam decks. You just went, preordered and waited. Yea, it took 1 or 2 months to get it in the mail, but you knew you were locked in and could go about your life until it got delivered.

Luckily I was able to get one. It was available two minutes before 10:00 am pst. My cart wouldn’t let me go further because of an error, so I just pressed next over and over till it took me to the next step.
